Player information

ADMS welcomes new players! The orchestra has around 40 regular members with strong string and wind sections. We bring in additional players where needed for concerts. We have an excellent leader, local musician Kate Bailey. Orchestral players are auditioned by a trial period in the orchestra. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings between September and June, except half terms and the Monday following a concert.

Admission to the orchestra depends on there being a vacancy for the instrument in question and on the player’s experience. At present we have a full woodwind and horn section, though deputies are always welcome to apply. In the brass we have vacancies for trumpets, trombones and tuba – though please be aware that repertoire sometimes doesn’t include these instruments. New string players are always welcome, and the repertoire usually demands a standard of Grade 7 to 8 minimum.

Each year, the society performs two concerts with mixed choral and orchestral works, a purely orchestral concert, a choral concert (sometimes with a smaller orchestra) and a light-hearted charity Christmas concert. In previous years, the Christmas concert has alternated between using the full orchestra and a chamber group.

November 2021: There are currently vacancies for Principal Clarinet and string players especially double basses.

If you are interested in joining the orchestra please email contact:

November-December 2021

There will be orchestral rehearsals at Trinity Church, Conduit Road, Abingdon on Mondays 22 and 29 November, and 6 December.

These are to rehearse Bach’s St Matthew Passion to be performed on 9 April 2022.

We are starting early because there will only be three weeks between the orchestral concert on 19 March and the performance of StMP, so this provides a little more time to become familiar with the work.

The particular sections of the work to be performed are being agreed with the conductor of Wantage Choral Society, Paul Burke.

Instrumentation is strings, 4 flutes, 4 oboes, and 1 or 2 bassoons. So no need for brass or clarinets to attend. Spike Wilson and Andrew Knowles will play the continuo parts.

There is NO Christmas charity concert this year. There may be some informal carol singing by the choir in Abingdon town centre on 11 December (TBC). Anyone from the orchestra can join in too.
